Great Britain faces an energy crisis of catastrophic proportions. Fossil-fuel power stations are closing, the nuclear program has failed and the intermittent quality of renewable generation has plunged the country into darkness. Degenesys, a prototype generation plant is hailed as the answer to the crisis, but power engineer, Matt Campbell, suspects that the innovative technology is dangerously flawed. When industrial sabotage exposes a colleague to its reactor core, Matt discovers that not only is the reaction out of control, but exposure to its crimson flare results in a debilitating mental affliction.
Soon, a storm of destruction engulfs the land, plunging society into a world devoid of technology and leaving its inhabitants with only their primal instincts to survive.
